Both halves are developed in the open, each with its own issue tracker:

Please say what you did, which version of Photo Diary the server runs, and for the app, which iPhone and iOS version. Email works too: ville@misaki.fi.

Running a site

SETUP.md covers installing Photo Diary, from a single personal instance to several on one host, with upgrades and day-to-day operation. It needs Node.js 22 or newer and runs behind nginx.

The iPhone app

Do I need my own server? To see your own photos, yes: the app is a companion for Photo Diary, version 1.0.7 or later, and you need an account on it. The built-in demo on the front page works without one, so you can look around first.

How do I add my server? On your Photo Diary site, sign in, open the user menu and choose Pair a device. Scan the QR code it shows with the app (+ on the front page, then Scan pairing QR code), or open the link on the iPhone, or copy it and paste it into the app. A code works once and for two minutes; New code makes another.

The app says my pairing has expired. Sessions last a while but not forever, and removing the app’s session on the site ends it. Pair the device again the same way; the app stays where you were.

Where are my todo pins? On the phone, and nowhere else: not on your server, not in any cloud. They go with the phone’s own backup if you have that on. Deleting the app deletes them.

Why are some photos missing from the map? Only photos with a location are on the map. The calendar shows them all.

I changed the language and nothing happened. The language takes effect the next time you open the app. Quit and reopen it.
